Insubordination Fest 09

Ok let me first start off by saying, I’m not a big fan of fests, large crowds, big get togethers or anything like that. I hate shit like, and I’m generally a pretty anti social person, that being said, the past 3 days I had a fucking blast, and I will definitely be going next year. I’m putting this over here instead of in my review blog because this less of a review of the fest as it is an account of the awesomeness that took place there.
The past couple days I’ve really felt like an old man, getting beat up, waking up feeling like shit, currently everything hurts and my leg is (or was) bleeding.
Non-band highlights, buying a ton of cool shit, Sick Sick Burgers (they were amazing and lifesavers), and watching the parking lot wiffle ball game.
I guess I’ll just throw out a run down of everyone that played now, if there’s a band missing that means I missed them.
JUNE 25, 2009 (Thursday)
TEENAGE BOTTLEROCKET – So much fun, so many people. I’d seen TBR once before and they were really good, but this was even better, they brought out their top game for this set. By the end I felt like I’d been sprayed with a sweat hose.
SHORT ATTENTION – Fun band, fun set, just fun all around. It was a blast for 30 seconds at a time.
FESTIPALS – I’d never heard them before, they were really good, wish I’d have snagged a CD.
JOHN WALSH – Also a new one for me, they brought the fun in economy sized boxes. Complete with a high five pit, a hug pit and a cover of the best around.
DELAY - Delay had the second best set of the entire fest, almost the best. Fuck I need to see these guys again, anyone who gets a chance to see them do it, they were fucking amazing.
CHALLENGED - A little generic and unenergetic. Their logo rules though.
LOBLAWS – I’m just not feeling these guys at all, they bore me. It’s a shame too because their name is great.
SICK SICK BIRDS – Second time I’ve seen them, honestly the first time was better but they played some new stuff that was great and it was a really good set. During the rest of the fest they cooked some Sick Sick Burgers, which were amazing, I ate 4.
DEEP SLEEP – They had the best set of the first night until Delay showed up. They brought their top game (and some great jokes).
CBGAV - Not too into these guys, their set was OK I guess.
RATIONAL ANTHEM – Had no idea who Rational Anthem was coming into this but I really dug them, luckily I found they had CD’s on Saturday, I quickly scooped one up.
FIRECRACKERS - Only caught their last song but it was catchy, I’ll be looking into firecrackers more.
JUNE 26, 2009 (Friday)
DEAD MILKMEN – I really just watched them to be able to say I’d seen the Dead Milkmen; they’re a pretty good band so it was cool. Their set was pretty fucking awesome though; I was pleasantly surprised with how good they were.
BORIS THE SPRINKLER – I’m not a big fan of Boris, and even less of one after seeing this set, pretty mediocre stuff here. However he did put on a show had some creepy ass body paint on, a helmet with deer antlers and the drummer had wings so I can’t knock them too badly, still the time could have been used for someone better.
BE MY DOPPELGANGER – I only caught part of their set, but these guys were really good. I’ll also be looking up more of them.
STEINWAYS – Insubordination Fest 09, the Steinways last show, unfortunately it was my first time seeing the Steinways. They put on a great great show; I wish they were still around so I could see them 100 more times.
SUCIDIE – Quick fast and energetic 8 minute set before the Steinways. They tore through their songs and left me wanting to hear more.
20 BELOWS – Had to leave this set early to catch the Steinways (stupid overlap) but the part I saw was really fucking good, so mad I didn’t see the whole thing.
COPYRIGHTS - Copyrights put on a good show, not some next level greatness that some of the other bands had but they were a lot of fun.
BACKSEAT VIRGINS – Put on a fun show.
LOST LOCKER COMBINATION – I only saw part of this set but it was some pretty catchy stuff from what I heard, I’ll be looking up more of their stuff soon.
DOPAMINES - Fucking amazing set here, they were almost as good as Delay. If you have a chance to see the Dopamines, do it. I hope I can see them many more times in the future.
SECRETIONS - Meh, these guys were alright, they had a real old punk feel, 10 years ago I’d have been all over this.
UNLOVABLES - This was my first time (hopefully not last) seeing the Unlovables. They had a really good set, this was one of the few acts that it really bothered me that there were short sets. I could listen to the Unlovables all fucking day.
KARMELLAS GAME – I can’t stand this band, still not good.
HOUSE BOAT – House Boat fucking tore it up. They had one of the best sets of the day and they played really early. Basically a new Steinways, or as they called it, “the good Steinways”. A lot of fun, I look forward to seeing them more and will be buying whatever they put out.
JETTY BOYS – Only caught part of this set but they had a lot of energy, I’m going to check out more of their stuff.
JUNE 27, 2009 (Saturday)
TEEN IDOLS - The Teen Idols have been around sense the early 90’s and in that time they’ve learned to put on a great show and it really showed Saturday night. They tore through their set like most of the other bands could have only dreamt doing. They were a highlight of the weekend.
SQUIRTGUN – Squirtgun’s set was like their music, OK. Pretty generic, not amazing but not terrible.
SIDEKICKS - Wow, these guys were pretty bad, I was mainly around for their set to give my feet a rest and have a beer.
KEPI GHOULIE – This was the one I was really disappointed in. I like Kepi Ghoulie’s stuff, the set however was pretty fucking bad, and I’m not sure what the fuck was going on.
PSYCHED TO DIE – Holy fucking shit. Psyched to Die had the best fucking set, even better than Delay’s pre-show awesomeness. Mikey Erg doing hardcore, I’d heard their shows were great and this did not disappoint. The metal guardrail was broken, there were people flying everywhere. I looked back at one point and there was a motherfucker hanging from the ceiling. I will see Psyched to Die as many times as possible, one of the most insane sets I’ve ever seen.
ONE SHORT FALL – Ok I missed this set but I’m putting this on there because they gave me one of the CD-R’s they were handing out. I listened to it today and I’m pretty bummed. The CD is really good fun stuff, I’ll be watching for these guys to play in the future.
TOYS THAT KILL – I had seen Toys That Kill once before, and they were good. This time around they were better. They had a great fucking set, one of the best of the day, it was a lot of fun, and they played “Bomb Sniffin’ Dogs” so I was happy.
METHADONES - The Methadones brought a really fun set, my first time seeing them and they lived up to some of the fun of their best albums.
BEATNIK TERMITES – Poppy surf rock at its best, the Beatnik Termites always bring a great show and this was no exception.
PARASITES - Playing their entire new (and great) album, the Parasites had a pretty fucking fun set, I hope this isn’t the only time I get to see them.
EGGHEAD - I happened into Egghead’s set part way through and was pretty impressed by the catchy fun that was on stage, I’ll be looking up Egghead too.
ADORKABLES - Fun set, solid.
MEASURE SA – Much like the Adorkables, they had a fun set, both were above average but not great.
APERS - My first time seeing the Apers, they had a fucking great set; it was a highlight of the day.
RESISTORS - I’m not quite sure what was going on here, when I came it was just Wimpy playing Queers songs; I don’t think there’s a need for me to point out that it was, of course, awesome.
DEAR LANDLORD – I had heard they put on a great show, and they did, also a highlight of the day. Looking forward to seeing them many more times.
LEMURIA - Probably the best Lemuria set I’ve seen, they’re a solid band but the previous times I’d seen them they weren’t so great live, they were really good this day.
CLINT MAUL – This set probably seemed more like I was actually at a show than any other set of the weekend. Clint Maul was top notch, fucking cool guy, great tunes.
HEXTALLS - They were my sleeper set of the weekend. No clue who these guys were coming into it, they had the best set until very late in the day, I immediately bought records after this one.
PROTEENS - I must say I was a bit disappointed here, the Proteens weren’t bad, they were just OK, and maybe it was just an off day.
KUNG FU MONKEYS – Never got into the Kung Fu Monkeys, I still have the same stance, but they had a lot of energy and seemed like they were having fun up there.
